Base64 encoding is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format.
It is widely used for transmitting data over systems that cannot handle binary data or that require data to be transmitted in a text format.
The encoding process works by converting 3 bytes (24 bits) of binary data into 4 bytes (32 bits) of ASCII text. A string of characters that is shorter than the original binary data is generated if each of the binary data’s 6 bits is represented by a single ASCII character.
The resulting encoded string can be safely transmitted over email or other text-based communication systems without the risk of data corruption or loss. Base64 encoding is commonly used for encoding email attachments, transmitting data over the internet, and storing data in databases or text files.
Base64 encoding is reversible, allowing the conversion of encoded data back to binary form. The decoding process works by reversing the encoding process, converting each block of 4 ASCII characters back into its corresponding 3 bytes of binary data.
